Our Approach
- While our portfolio companies benefit from the strength of W. R. Berkley Corporation, companies in which we invest operate independently of our parent company
- Following an investment, we work with management as partners at the Board-level to define strategic direction and to ensure the portfolio company has the required resources to realize opportunities
- As our portfolio companies evaluate new markets, launch new products or seek executive talent, Berkley Capital leverages its relationships and resources to support the management team in the execution of the portfolio company’s strategy
As a result of our permanent source of capital, we are able to support our portfolio companies in ways traditional private equity funds often cannot:
- Investment Horizon: Our investment holding period is determined by a portfolio company’s achievement of key milestones rather than driven by typical fund constraints (e.g., the need to demonstrate liquidity for fundraising)
- Investment Structure: Our ability to provide various forms of capital (e.g., senior or subordinated debt alongside an equity investment) minimizes management distraction, lowers transaction expenses and enhances the certainty of a transaction closing in a timely manner
- Transaction Types: While our investment criteria outlines our core areas of focus, our permanent capital allows us to be opportunistic and pursue attractive opportunities regardless of industry or stage of development
- We believe that “financial engineering” is insufficient to achieve outstanding risk-adjusted returns
- Instead, we focus on identifying industries, companies and management teams demonstrating the characteristics needed to achieve sustained growth
- As active investors, we work closely with portfolio company management teams on a variety of growth strategies, including add-on acquisitions, new product introductions and strategic partnerships
